Sleep tip #9
Soothing Sounds for Sleep
It's a common misconception that bedtime should be dead quiet. In fact, the opposite is true. There are sounds that truly help with one's sleep. The first thing to understand is that all of us need different things at different times, and for different reasons.
Some people benefit from silence; others like to listen to music or nature sounds. But no matter what your preference is, it's important to know how to find the right sound mix for you, so you can get the most out of your sleep time.
So, what sounds are the best for sleeping?
The ideal nighttime sounds for sleeping can vary from person to person, but you should think about using sounds that are loud enough to mask out other noises and that has a constant volume and tone; fast fluctuations in volume or tone could wake you up.
Try out a couple of different ones and see what works for you. Here are some tips to get you going:
RAINFOREST SOUNDS
They have been proven to help people fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. When you listen to rainforest sounds before sleeping, it actually helps your brain get ready to drift off--slowing down its activity patterns and lowering cortisol levels in the body.
So not only will you get better sleep, but you'll also feel more relaxed when it's time to wake up!
OCEAN WAVES
The waves provide a steady, lulling beat that helps you feel calmer and more relaxed. And it's not just about hearing the waves—it's about feeling them too! The sensation of being near or in water can help you slow your breathing down and relax your muscles, which can also help you fall asleep more easily.
All in all, the constant, rhythmic sound of waves crashing against the shore is said to be one of the most effective sounds for inducing sleepiness in people.
WHITE NOISE
This type of sound is a great way to drown out external sounds and get a good night's sleep. It works by masking other noises in your environment so that you can focus on the sound of your choice.
If you're trying to block out traffic noise or an annoying neighbor, white noise can be used to drown out these noises and allow you to fall asleep easily. Whirring fan, radio, television static, and hissing radiator are just a few examples.
PINK NOISE
This has a higher pitch than white noise but is still constant. Pink noise also helps drown out distracting noises and makes it easier to fall asleep. Examples are traffic sounds, rustling leaves, etc.
It's often used by people who work at night or have trouble sleeping because it helps them get into a deep sleep without waking up in the middle of the night due to sudden changes in volume or pitch in the background noises around them.
There are many soothing sounds to choose from! You'll find one that suits you, for sure. It only takes a little testing to figure out what pleases you the most.
