Sleep is one of those things we take for granted—until we don't get enough of it. Then, all of a sudden, we're tired and cranky and can't remember our own names.
You might be surprised to learn that continuously lacking sleep can negatively affect both your physical and emotional health. But, no worries--we're here to provide you that information along with giving you the best simple tips to prioritize sleep.
WHAT DOES LACK OF SLEEP DO TO US?
Lack of sleep can damage learning ability, weaken the immune system, and increase one's risk of diabetes, hypertension, coronary heart disease, depression, and other conditions. It can also have a bad impact on your mood and short-term memory.
So, if you want to improve your health in 2023, try prioritizing your sleep over the other resolutions (or merely continue from last year).
WHAT CAN WE DO TO PRIORITIZE SLEEP?
2. Big meals, coffee, and alcohol should be discouraged before going to bed.
If your body isn't used to digesting food late at night, it could disrupt your sleep. And caffeine can keep us awake for hours after we've had it.
Alcohol makes us drowsy initially but disrupts deep sleep later on in the night (and also dehydrates us).
3. Do NOT press ‘snooze’
It will only make you feel more tired and groggy when it goes off again—and then again, and again. And then at some point in the day, you'll hit the snooze button so many times that you'll end up falling asleep with your phone in your hand and waking up with a crick in your neck from being hunched over for so long.
So don't press snooze—just get up when your alarm goes off.
If you're reading this, it's probably because you took sleep for granted last year. But you're here, now. And that's a good thing--because the more we ignore it, the more we drift away from self-improvement. Sleep is a process that helps us recover from the day's stress, prepare for tomorrow, and restore our mental and physical health.
It is the time when our bodies are able to repair themselves after a long day at work or school. Start making changes, it's time for your royal upgrade.
