It’s about SLEEP. It’s about QUALITY. It’s about YOU.
Many of us have had that startling experience of just dozing off when - whoosh! - it feels like we're falling, causing us to jerk awake.
Known as a "hypnic jerk", this common phenomenon has puzzled sleep experts for years!
What are Hypnic Jerks?
Simply put, they are involuntary twitches or spasms that occur just as a person is transitioning from wakefulness to sleep. This sudden sensation often feels as if one is falling, accompanied by a rapid heartbeat or a sharp intake of breath.
Bet you’ve experienced it atleast once, it’s totally normal.
But, it can cause disturbed sleep…
For those who have it frequently, the sudden jerks can lead to disturbances in the sleep cycle, making it harder to fall asleep again. And in some occassions, experiencing this sensation regularly can lead to anxiety about sleep, exacerbating insomnia in certain individuals.
Avoiding Hypnic Jerks
While they're generally harmless, here are some potential remedies for those who find them disruptive:
Maintain a Regular Sleep Schedule: This is a must for getting better sleep. Going to bed and waking up at consistent times can help regulate your body's internal clock and potentially reduce the frequency of hypnic jerks.
Limit Caffeine and Stimulants: Consuming these, especially closer to bedtime, can worsen the phenomenon.
Relaxation Techniques: Activities such as reading, meditation, or taking a warm bath can prepare the body for a more peaceful transition into sleep. You can start with some easy breathing exercises!
The sensation of falling and suddenly waking up can be unsettling, but understanding it can make it less intimidating. Remember, it's just your body's way of ensuring you're safe, even if you're merely getting deep into your dreams.
Sleep tight and may your dreams be without falls!
